I ask my participants, “What is your success factor in life” Some of them told me about luck, support from parents, good PR skills , good experience and profound professional knowledge” I was surprised that none of them explain the success factor from attitude point of view. As a result, many people do not put much emphasize on attitude development.
Lately, I discover that “skills training” is more popular than attitude training. Many people want to learn leadership skills, selling skills, negotiation skills etc. In fact, ton of skills would become useless if we do not have the right mental attitude to apply them. Many professional are not doing their best in their choosing skills just because they are too smart to break the rules with WRONG ATTITUDE. There are doctors who are trapped in jail just because they misused their professional knowledge and skills.
In fact, I wish to acknowledge that attitude is as important as skills and knowledge. This is why most of the company stating the Core Values as part of their staff appraisal system. Good attitude lead to better commitment, better responsibility and better productivity. It also leads to better team work, better working relationship and better organization culture.
There are few criteria to inject “good attitude” among work force:
First : Reminder and pointer
People need to be remind again and again wither through verbal, written or demo by others. The more we remind them, the attitude become stronger
Second : Rules and guidelines
People want to know what can be done, and what cannot be done. When we have set up a standard performance for ourselves, we will use the guideline in our daily life.
Third : Rewards and penalty
People want to be appreciated when they are doing the right things. The more we rewards people, the better their self esteem to carry out positive attitude. Penalty is another way of creating awareness but must be executed in good term to avoid resistance to change.
There are many success factors which impact your performance. These success factors are varies base on your key performance indication (Kpi) and environment challenges. The tougher the challenges, the more success factors would be involved. Any how, attitude factor can always rank number one in the world class performance. Most of the world class competition is not just depend on skills , but more on mental factor.
Attitude is always the major success factor in all area of endeavor. When the game become tougher, the attitude of achiever must be equipped with greater and smarter attitude.
